History of the “Land of Enchantment”

Land of Enchantment became the official nickname of New Mexico in 1999, although it was in use since 1941 on New Mexico license plates. The name alludes to both the scenic vistas for which New Mexico is famous, from the Four Corners to the mountains to the plains, as well as for its wealth of history, from ancient American Indian civilizations to Spanish and other European settlements. New Mexico continues to be the home of many diverse cultures and to enthrall everyone with the stunning beauty of its natural world.
